How to Choose the Right Cabinet Hardware: Knobs, Pulls & Handles Guide

Hardware: The Jewelry of Your Kitchen

Cabinet hardware might seem like a small detail, but it has an outsized impact on your kitchen's overall look and feel. The right hardware can elevate a simple Shaker cabinet to designer-level, while the wrong choice can undermine even the most beautiful door style.

Here's our guide to choosing hardware that complements your cabinets and ties your kitchen design together.

Knobs vs. Pulls: The Great Debate

**Knobs** work best on cabinet doors. They're classic, compact, and available in endless styles from traditional round to modern geometric shapes.

**Pulls (bar handles)** work best on drawers, where you need more grip to pull them open. They also look great on larger cabinet doors.

**Our recommendation:** Use knobs on upper cabinet doors and pulls on lower drawers and doors. This creates a balanced, functional design that looks intentional.

Choosing the Right Finish

Hardware finish should complement — not match exactly — your other kitchen metals (faucet, light fixtures, appliances).

- **Brushed nickel/satin nickel:** The most versatile. Works with everything from white Shaker to dark modern cabinets. - **Matte black:** Perfect for modern and farmhouse kitchens. Creates bold contrast on light cabinets. - **Brushed gold/champagne bronze:** The trending choice for 2026. Adds warmth and sophistication, especially with navy, green, or white cabinets. - **Chrome:** Best for ultra-modern, high-gloss kitchens. - **Oil-rubbed bronze:** Ideal for traditional and rustic designs.

Size Matters

Hardware that's too small looks lost; hardware that's too large overwhelms the door.

**General guidelines:** - Knobs: 1" to 1.5" diameter for most cabinet doors - Pulls on drawers: 3" to 5" center-to-center for small drawers, 6" to 12" for larger drawers - Pulls on doors: 3" to 5" center-to-center

When in doubt, ask your design consultant to bring sample doors and hardware options to your home. Seeing hardware on your actual door style in your own kitchen makes the decision much easier.
