Step 2: Measure Windows & Doors
Step 3: Measure Appliances
Step 4: Note Electrical, Plumbing & Obstructions
Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid
Rounding measurements
Always record exact measurements in inches. Rounding up or down by even ¼ inch can cause cabinets to not fit.
Forgetting to measure ceiling height
Ceiling height determines whether you can use 30" or 36" wall cabinets, and whether crown molding will fit.
Measuring old appliances instead of new ones
If you're upgrading appliances, use the new dimensions. A wider fridge means less cabinet space.
Ignoring trim and molding
Window and door trim takes up space. Measure to the outside edge of all trim, not the glass or door frame.
Not noting obstructions
Pipes, vents, outlets, and light switches all affect cabinet placement. Mark everything on your sketch.
Measuring only once
Always measure twice. One wrong number can delay your entire project and require re-ordering.
