The Complete Guide to Caring for Your Quartzite Countertops

Living with Quartzite: What to Expect

Quartzite countertops combine the breathtaking beauty of marble with the incredible hardness of granite. The natural veining, the cool-to-the-touch surface, the stunning movement — quartzite delivers luxury without the high-maintenance reputation.

Formed under extreme heat and pressure deep in the earth, quartzite is one of the hardest natural stones available for countertops. With the right care habits, your quartzite countertops will look stunning for a lifetime.

Daily Care: The Basics

**Do:** - Wipe spills promptly, especially acidic liquids (lemon juice, wine, vinegar) - Use a soft cloth or sponge with warm water and mild dish soap for daily cleaning - Use trivets under hot cookware as a best practice - Use cutting boards to protect both your knives and the surface

**Don't:** - Use harsh chemical cleaners (bleach, ammonia, abrasive cleaners) - Let acidic substances sit on the surface for extended periods - Use rough scrubbing pads that can dull the polish - Assume quartzite is indestructible — it's incredibly hard but still natural stone

Sealing: Your Best Defense

Sealing is the most important maintenance step for quartzite countertops.

**How often:** Every 12-18 months for kitchen countertops. Quartzite is denser than many natural stones, so it requires less frequent sealing.

**How to test if you need to reseal:** Place a few drops of water on the surface. If the water beads up, your seal is good. If it soaks in within 10 minutes, it's time to reseal.

At KC Cabinetry & Stone, we seal all quartzite countertops during installation and provide you with a recommended sealant and care instructions.

Dealing with Stains and Wear

Quartzite is significantly more resistant to etching than softer natural stones. However, no natural stone is completely immune to staining if left unsealed.

**For stubborn stains:** A poultice made from baking soda and water can draw out stains over 24-48 hours. Apply the paste, cover with plastic wrap, and let it sit.

**For dull spots:** These are rare with quartzite but can occur over time. Professional polishing can restore the original luster.

**Important:** Quartzite's hardness means it resists scratches better than almost any other natural stone — it actually scores a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, compared to granite's 6-7.

Is Quartzite Right for You?

Quartzite is the ideal choice for homeowners who want the stunning veined look of luxury natural stone with durability that rivals granite. It's heat resistant, scratch resistant, and with proper sealing, highly stain resistant.

If you want zero maintenance, engineered quartz might be a better fit. But if you want genuine natural stone with dramatic movement and patterns that no engineered product can replicate, quartzite is an outstanding choice.
